Keti Koti means ‘Shackles Broken’. This is the name of the day on which slavery is commemorated and freedom is celebrated every year on July 1 in the Netherlands. About 150 years ago, slavery came to an end in Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles, which were then colonies of the Netherlands.

Satu Suro is de eerste dag van het Javaanse kalenderjaar in de maand Suro, overeenkomend met de eerste islamitische maand Muharram. Het wordt vooral gevierd op Java, Indonesië en door Javanen die elders wonen.

It’s a public holiday coinciding with the U.N.’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The holiday celebrates indigenous people, who are the soul of Suriname, and their identity.
