The Netherlands and Suriname will intensify their cooperation to improve the coastal protection of Paramaribo. This week, the Anton De Kom University of Suriname, Boskalis and Deltares started a feasibility study to investigate how the Boskalis dredging material can be used for mangrove restoration.
This project is financed by Partners for Water of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency – RVO.
Suriname is particularly vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change due to its low-lying coastal area. Mangrove forests provide natural coastal protection for Suriname and the mangrove trees prevent further erosion of the coastline and store carbon. The mangrove forests are also an important source of food for fauna and the local population. The preservation and strengthening of the Surinamese mangrove is therefore of great importance.
