A delegation from the WHO FCTC (Framework Convention on Tobacco Control) Secretariat visited the Ministry of Health on Monday, July 31, 2023 as part of the joint mission to support the implementation of the WHO FCTC in Suriname.
The visit discussed the objectives of the mission and key messages that will be communicated at all meetings on government priorities in tobacco control. The joint mission aims to support the government of Suriname in promoting priority tobacco control activities.
These include strategic engagement meetings and building support among policy makers and government agencies for the adoption of the amendments to the tobacco law and creating support for increasing the tobacco tax, the introduction of neutral standardized tobacco packaging, awareness sessions about illicit trade in tobacco products and the importance for Suriname to accede to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products.
